Finally Here and Able to Write!

I'm here! In Guyana and it is BEAUTIFUL and hot as a mother:) So far we have been very busy with training which is good because it's keeping me from being too homesick. We flew into Georgetown on Sunday morning and were staying at a resort up until yesterday. Then we took a bus and a boat to get up to the Esquibo Coast (North West of Georgetown)where we met our host families. My family consists of Gwendalyn, Wanda and Rashanda. A mother and two daughters, one 22 and one 15. They live about 15 minutes away from our training sight in Queenstown. It is great to be here and experience some real Guyanese culture from a local family. Last night they taught me how to make roti, a flakey tortilla that they use to eat curries such... no untensils for me, just roti! There are goats, cows, horses and dogs wandering around the streets and keeping me up until the wee hours of the morning. As well as "cock-crows" with their morning wake up calls. So far, the mosquitos haven't been too bad and I haven't ecountered bed bugs or spiders of any sort (whew!). Being with my host family last night made me miss home quite a bit. But I'm staying positive and focusing on getting through one day at a time. Any e-mails with words of encouragement and support would be greatly appreciated during my "downs" of the emotional roller coaster ride I'm on. I miss you all so much and will keep you updated as regularly as possible:) Tell the US I say hello and have a slice o' pizza for dear old Annie.

sounds great over there. how fun to have someone your age in your host family! what has your training consisted of?! you keeping sunscreen on your skin and staying hydrated?! cant wait to hear more stories!
things with me over here in the U S of A are pretty similar. staying warm and busy. yelled at a student in my rock class in front of the whole class and it worked. haha. :) then my backpacking class is going well and soccer...well it's going. :) the classes i am taking are pretty cool. i am enjoying them! lots of reading and writing. moved across the hall of my house. wish you could see my room. it's spectacular!!! so huge. we could play for hours in it! :) nicole and i have a new roomie. one that is 18, female, LOVES elephants, and into gardening. she seems pretty cool so far. working out nicely. so we'll see...stay tuned! anyways. that's all i've got.
love and miss you! stay strong and positive over there. choose your attitude!!! it's 90% of the experience! (someone really smart once told me that)

  2. Hi Annie,

I'm am so excited to follow your adventure!! It will probably take some time for you to get into the swing of things, but know that we are back here cheering for you. Elise wrote me a letter before I left for Kenya and she said something that I think everyone needs to hear when embarking on a journey like this, and now I will pass that on to you:) Know that the fact that you are taking this on with a pure heart is enough in itself to keep you safe. And know that I believe in your life..very, very much. Whenever you are feeling sad, angry, lonely, excited, wounded, hopeful or exhausted, write it down..get it out...know that what you are doing is making a difference even if you can't always see it.

we will miss you but we will keep sending you our warm thoughts while you are away.

    Talk to you soon!!

    Brittany B.
